Avoiding Genetically Modified Food

February 24th, 2010

Since the FDA and USDA do not require labelling of Genetically Modified (GM) food, despite most Americans wanting GM food to be labelled, how do you ensure that the food you are feeding your family hasn’t been genetically modified?

According to The Non-GMO Shopping Guide there are four simple rules that should keep your family safe:

  1. Buy Organic. Organic producers are not allowed to use GMOs.
  2. Look for “Non-GMO” Labels.
  3. Avoid At-Risk Ingredients including
    Corn, Soybeans, Canola, Cottonseed
  4. Buy products listed in the Non-GMO Shopping Guide

One of the things you need to realize in making food purchases is that reading labels is critical. When you do, you come to realize that almost everything that comes in a box or a bag contains corn, soybeans, canola or cottonseed oil, often in an alternative form ie. high fructose corn syrup. What doesn’t contain the big four, often contains sugar. If the sugar is from sugarbeets, it’s GM. Fructose, dextrose and glucose are all either corn sugars or sugarbeet sugars and should be avoided. The there’s corn meal, cornstarch, lecithin, protein, isoflavone and isolate. Rapeseed oil is the same as canola oil, and should be avoided. I learned a long time ago that it’s often just easier to stop buying anything in a box or a bag than having to read the labels while shopping. Those dang ingredient lists will give you a headache!

The easiest way to avoid GM food is to just eat Real Food. Grow your own food, cook your own food. Stop eating out of packages.

Remember to read pet food labels too! Dry dog and cat food is chock full of nasty GM corn, and pet cancer rates are skyrocketing.
