The New York Times today has an article about how the EPA has had to prioritize enforcement based on which actions will not easily be challenged in the courts based on the Supreme Court’s ruling on the meaning of the word “navigable” in the Clean Water Act.
There’s a bill that’s been approved in Senate Committee, The Clean Water Restoration Act, but it’s not yet been put on the agenda. And the Glenn Becks of the world have already started whining to the farm community about how passing of this legislation would give the government draconian powers over farmers. Meanwhile polluters, realizing they’re not being regulated, are again dumping their poisons in streams and ponds.
We need to make a big noise about this. And we need to start getting stories in the media about the real impacts this is having on real people and their pets to counteract the teabagger noise machine. We also need to get the organic farming community behind this. I’ll be keeping a watch on this and let you know if there are any actions we can take.
