Organic Gardening Season Returns!

May 23rd, 2012

I just picked my first two strawberries and popped them right in my mouth off the vine. No, I didn’t wash them (yeah Ma, you heard right!) and I refuse to worry about it. How can I do that? They were grown organically.

Though there was an early bloom here in PA, and then a few frost scares as things were blooming, my garden is looking GOOD. I’ve never seen so many berries on my red currant bush and can’t wait for them to ripen! The raspberry bush suffered a bit from the downed tree during that surprise snowstorm last October, but there are some blooms on it, and the birds seem to have seeded quite a few new wineberry bushes for me!

My peas are almost waist high, the beans are sprouting (I got them in late) and I’ll be starting to pick lettuce soon. I got a few tomatoes in, but need to add a couple more plants, and yes, I’m a bit late. Peppers are in, spinach is sprouting, onions are looking good.

The herbs took a bit of a hit, I lost some of my thyme and all my rosemary, but I’ve replaced them. Oregano is incredible this year, though, to make up for it. And the lavender is lovely. I’ve also got parsley in.

Since I use companion planting methods, I’ve not experienced much in the way of pests. But I found a great site that lists organic pest control remedies if I need them.

I love picking fresh food out of my organic garden. I just wish I had the room for a larger one!

What are you planting?
