If you’ve been on the Raw Food Diet for any time now, you know that it’s much healthier for you than most other diets. There are more nutrients per pound in raw foods than there are in cooked foods, and they’re in a form that is more easily digestible. But it’s possible you could be making a big mistake that could be sabotaging your efforts.
What’s the problem?
Buying Supermarket Produce is a HUGE mistake. Supermarket produce is not fresh. It was picked days, and sometimes even weeks ago. Then it was transported by a diesel burning truck to a packing plant, and we all know about how “clean” those packing plants are! From there it was shipped by diesel burning truck to a distribution center, and from there to your supermarket. Each day on the road or being “processed” or “distributed” represents lost nutrients! And the chance of salmonella or e coli contamination is real.
It’s bad enough if you’re buying organic produce, which is denser and richer in nutrients than its petrochemically grown counterpart, but if you’re buying conventionally grown produce the situation is even worse.
Large Scale commercial growers use petrochemical fertlizers, herbicides and pesticides to enhance and protect their crops, many of which are grown from Genetically Modified seedstock. This food production method keeps the plants free of insects and supposedly increases the yield. The problem with the result is that those herbicides and pesticides are poisons that won’t scrub off the produce completely, and the enhancement in the size of that food is from water bloat, which means less nutrients per pound of produce, as well as blander flavor. And the petrochemical fertilizers wash into streams and eventually into our estuaries where they create dead zones, like that found in the Chesapeake Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. These petrochemicals are used on all non-organic supermarket produce — carrots, squash, lettuce, cabbage, tomatoes, apples, pears, oranges . . . anything grown by a large scale commercial grower for the supermarket chains. So even though you are consuming the food in a more “natural” state you’re also eating all of those poisons, which jeopardizes your health and the health of your family. Those poisons and fertilizers are also making our watersheds unsustainable for aquatic life.
Many diseases have been tied to pesticide residue, including cancer. Genetically modified corn has now been linked to organ damage in humans, and to Bee Colony Collapse Disorder. Veterinarians have also documented more cancer in pets since the introduction of genetically modified corn with pesticide residue into pet foods. Chemicals and genetically modified foods shouldn’t be a part of our diet. They were never meant to be.
